Awards/Honors

Dr. Reza Ardehali, assistant professor of cardiology, Dr. Elissa Hallem, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, and Dr. Lili Yang, assistant professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics, received NIH Director’s New Innovator awards for stem-cell and neuroscience research in medicine. The three scientists are researchers in the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCLA.

Dr. James S. Economou (RES ’82, ’83), Beaumont Professor of Surgery and chief of surgical oncology, has been elected to the Institute of Medicine, among the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine.

Dr. Tomas Ganz (MD ’78, RES ’81, FEL ’83), professor of medicine and pathology and co-director of UCLA’s Center for Iron Disorders, presented the American Society of Hematology’s 2014 E. Donnall Thomas Lecture in honor of his research in iron homeostasis.

Dr. Peter Lawrence, Wiley Barker Chair in Vascular Surgery, Bergman Chair of Vascular Research, chief of vascular surgery and vice chair of the Department of Surgery, was elected president of the Society for Vascular Surgery.
