On December 4, 2009, the Brain Research Institute hosted a luncheon, in celebration of its 50th anniversary, at the Gonda (Goldschmied) Neuroscience and Genetics Research Center. Dr. Chris Evans, director, thanked donors and friends for their support and highlighted BRI’s history and accomplishments. Dr. Michael Phelps, co-inventor of positron emission tomography (PET), gave a presentation entitled “Molecular Imaging Diagnostics with PET: From Research to the Care of Patients.”

The UCLA/Orthopaedic Hospital Center for Cerebral Palsy (CCP) hosted a reception for friends and supporters on March 16, 2010, at the Renee and Meyer Luskin Children’s Clinic of Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital in Santa Monica. The CCP is the only cerebral palsy clinic in the U.S. that treats both pediatric and adult patients, providing an extraordinarily high quality of interdisciplinary care regardless of ability to pay. Guests were welcomed by Drs. William Oppenheim, Anthony Scaduto, Robert Pedowitz and James V. Luck, Jr. Dr. Eileen Fowler presented details of the CCP’s research and educational endeavors, while staff demonstrated some of the latest equipment and modalities benefiting patients.

MedMagSpring10-Poker TournamentOn Saturday, April 3, 2010, Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA Board Members J.R. Delang and Mark Sear hosted the Fifth Annual No Limit Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament at Fox Studios, bringing the total raised over five years to nearly $750,000 to benefit the hospital. This event has proven to be a funfilled day for all involved, with a breakfast tutorial for those new to Texas Hold’em, golf practice with a pro, and a silent auction filled with one-of-a-kind items. Physician-in-chief Dr. Edward R.B. McCabe paid special tribute to Shari Schroder, executive director of Fox Studios Marketing, for producing the event each year.

The Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation’s annual Taste for a Cure signature event was held on April 30, 2010, at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, with proceeds benefiting the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. The evening showcased distinguished wineries from Stags Leap District Winegrowers and top Downtown Los Angeles restaurants, while honoring Ted Harbert, president and CEO of Comcast Entertainment Group, with the Gil Nickel Humanitarian Award. Dinner Committee co-chairs were Barbara Fairchild, editor-in-chief of Bon Appétit magazine; Jon Holman, president of The Holman Group; Larry Maguire, president and CEO of Far Niente Winery; Jay Sures, partner and board member of United Talent Agency; and Dana Walden, co-chairman of 20th Century Fox television. Ryan Seacrest, television/radio host and producer, served as honorary co-chair.

The 17th Annual Entertainment Industry Foundation Revlon Run/Walk for Women Los Angeles took place on May 8, 2010. The Revlon/UCLA Women’s Cancer Research program is the leading beneficiary of this annual 5k event, which is the city’s largest fundraiser for women’s cancers. the UCLA fights Women’s cancer team (#105) was open to all supporters. participants MedMagSpring10-Mattle Party on the Pierreceived a UCLA Fights Women’s Cancer team T-shirt and tote bag.

The 11th Annual Mattel Party on the Pier is scheduled for October 17, 2010, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier. The signature event underwrites the vital work of Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA, supporting physicians, programs and research within the UCLA Department of Pediatrics.
